Board hears enforcement and inspector reports; association raises delivery and suspension concerns

At the April 10 meeting, the Alcohol Beverage Board of St. Mary's County received routine enforcement and inspector reports and heard from the St. Mary's licensee association.
Deputy Stephen Myers, the board's alcohol enforcement coordinator, reported that March tobacco compliance checks covered 22 locations: 18 were compliant and four were not. Myers said one of the noncompliant sites was an alcohol establishment and that sheriff's office compliance activity will prompt follow-up. He also reported the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office arrested 20 people for driving under the influence in March and the Maryland State Police arrested 17. Myers said he performed stationary surveillance at Village Liquors and A & B Liquors for an hour each with no violations, served four alcohol-violation summonses, and inspected local parks (Summit District, Leonardtown Wharf, Colton's Point, Piney Point and Dorsey Park) with no open-container violations.
Board Inspector Kevin Hall said he spent much of the month on office duties while filling in for an absent staff member, completed several inspections and performed a walkthrough after AMC Theatres turned in its license to ensure no alcohol remained on the premises.
A representative of the St. Mary's Licensee Beverage Association told the board the association meets monthly and asked the board to consider waiting to suspend licenses until licensees have had an opportunity to appeal. The association representative also said liquor distributors have reduced weekly deliveries, a change causing problems for some members; the association said it plans to invite distributor representatives to discuss delivery schedules at a future meeting.
