Elected officials compensation commission recommends raises for Provo mayor and council

The Elected Officials Compensation Commission presented its report to the Provo City Council on April 8, unanimously recommending an annual mayoral salary of $160,959 and a council member salary of $28,846. Juan Ribaldi, chair of the commission, said the recommendation was based on comparisons with salaries in similar Utah cities and accounting for expected cost-of-living adjustments of roughly 2–2.5 percent.
Ribaldi told the council the mayor’s proposed salary would put Provo around the median for comparable cities and cited additional responsibilities Provo carries — including operations of an airport and municipal power — as factors supporting the recommendation. For council members, the commission accounted for retirement benefits and estimated additional communications and travel expenses; the commission recommended an annual expense allowance of $3,300 per council member.
Council members thanked the commission and asked Ribaldi to submit the written report to staff for the record. The report is required by Provo City Ordinance 4.04125 and is produced every four years in mayoral election years.
