Salina Human Relations Commission reviews intake dockets, updates Fair Housing event and survey plans

The Salina Human Relations Commission at its March 11, 2025 meeting approved previous meeting minutes and reviewed intake dockets, received an update on the Fair Housing 2025 event and heard that the survey subcommittee will return a draft for the April meeting.

Commissioners were told there was one new employment inquiry since the last report, no change for two other employment matters, one housing case that had a probable-cause finding and another housing matter currently before the U.S. Department of Justice, and one public-accommodations matter that staff referred to the Kansas Disability Rights Center; that public-accommodations matter was listed with a date of 04/27/24 and does not yet have a case number assigned. Staff characterized the docket changes as limited and said the newly reported employment intake may or may not proceed further.

The commission also received a Fair Housing 2025 update. Staff said promotional flyers were distributed last week and registration has begun; staff reported seeing at least three registrations and another participant estimated “three or four,” while a different commissioner said the total was about 10. A new sponsor joined after the meeting materials were published and the event will be held at a new location that staff did not name on the record. Commissioners were asked to sign up for specific shifts via a circulated sheet; staff said commissioners do not need to pay to attend if they participate as commissioners and that paper copies and links will be provided once final materials are ready.

Members heard a report from the survey subcommittee. The subcommittee met the prior week; staff said the meeting occurred late enough that a written summary and draft survey questions were not yet available but that staff will prepare a summary and sample questions for the commission’s next meeting, listed on the record as April 8, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Formal actions at the meeting were procedural. The commission moved and seconded approval of the minutes and voted in favor. Later, a motion to adjourn was moved, seconded and approved.
