Del Mar Hills rebuild nears completion; Carmel Del Mar modernization moves into staff and student engagement

District facilities staff updated the board on construction at Del Mar Hills and planning for the Carmel Del Mar modernization.
Presenters Crystal Henty and Nathan Wolf said Del Mar Hills construction began in June 2024 and the roof is now dried in with waterproofing applied, HVAC rooftop units installed and interior storefronts and painted learning studios under way. Staff reported the project remains on schedule to complete before the 2025 school year and that modern learning‑studio furnishings have been measured and ordered for summer delivery.
On Carmel Del Mar, staff said community engagement is complete and staff and student engagement sessions are underway to guide design choices. Architects are using virtual tools and student activity packets to help students imagine spaces; staff engagement covered restrooms, classroom layouts and other program priorities. Facilities staff cautioned that some items such as playground equipment or added solar installations are not currently budgeted for immediate installation and may be scheduled after the main modernization work is finished.
Board members who toured Del Mar Hills praised the increased natural light and clearer front entryway and asked staff to return with more refined cost estimates as design details for Carmel Del Mar are finalized.
Ending: Work on Del Mar Hills will continue through the spring with furniture deliveries planned in summer; Carmel Del Mar will move from conceptual engagement into more detailed design and cost estimating.
