Library programs, seed library and Friends' fundraisers highlighted at Fargo board meeting

Library staff and the Friends of the Fargo Public Library reported several upcoming programs and recent events at the board's March meeting.

Staff highlighted a readers' theater program for children in grades two through five this Thursday, with participants starting at 10 a.m. and a performance for family and friends at 11:30 a.m. A teen program to decorate canvas tote bags using flower-based dyes is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at the Northport location. An adult herbal-tea tasting program will be held next Tuesday evening at the Carlson lisonbee location; staff said a Master Gardener from the community would present. Staff also announced the library's seed library is expected to open April 2 at the Maine and Carlson locations; patrons may check out up to five seed packets per visit.

Marissa Nygord, president of the Friends of the Fargo Public Library, told the board the Friends hosted a Read In on March 8 that drew about 80 to 90 people. The Friends approved funding for mixed-nuts refreshments and the summer reading challenge "Color Our World" and reminded the board about a Friends book sale planned in April. Nygord said the Friends had written a letter of opposition to Senate Bill 2307 in alignment with the board's advocacy.

Staff reported February usage was down compared with 2024, which they attributed in part to the library not being open on Sundays; volunteer hours remained strong. February financials are within expected ranges for the fiscal period, with expenditures under the 17% mark and some donation revenue; staff thanked the Friends for programming support. The board set its next meeting for April 15 and adjourned.
