Fargo spotlights MAT transit operations, crowns transit "Rising Star"

The City of Fargo used the commission meeting to spotlight Metro Area Transit (MAT) operations in Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead and Dilworth and to present the first Fargo Rising Star award to transit dispatcher Andrew Ulmer.

City presenters described MAT’s three service modes: fixed‑route buses on predetermined routes and schedules, paratransit for residents with physical or cognitive disabilities (available via pre‑application), and an on‑demand service that operates by app within defined zones. Staff reported the system provided approximately 1,200,000 rides last year.

Officials described maintenance and safety practices: buses undergo inspections about every 5,000 miles; vehicles are replaced on a roughly 12‑year schedule to control maintenance costs; drivers perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections; and the system recently introduced digital inspections on tablets to allow real‑time defect reporting and faster shop prioritization.

Staff also highlighted rider tools including a live bus tracker on the agency website and an annual “Try MAT Bus Week” (staff said the next event will be in October and routes will be free during that week). The city emphasized transit’s role in reducing congestion and providing affordable mobility.

The commission presented the Fargo Rising Star award to Andrew Ulmer, a fixed‑route dispatcher with more than three years in his current role and a background as a Transdev dispatcher, road supervisor and bus operator. The award recognizes city employees with seven years or fewer of service who have demonstrated initiative and customer service.

No actions or policy changes were taken. Staff said they will continue highlighting departmental operations and sharing information with the public.
