Mayor issues proclamations honoring Cherry Blossom royalty, firefighter Stephen M. Stafford and Southwest Patriots

Mayor Lester M. Miller read a series of proclamations on March 18, 2025 recognizing civic volunteers, a retired firefighter, and a high-school sports team.

Miller proclaimed March 18, 2025, as Cherry Blossom Royalty Ambassadors Appreciation Day, citing the Yoshino cherry trees and the Macon International Cherry Blossom Festival—s role in promoting tourism, community fellowship and cultural programming. The mayor—s proclamation thanked past members of the festival—s royal court for serving as ambassadors for the city and urged citizens to recognize their contributions.

The mayor also read a proclamation honoring Battalion Chief Stephen M. Stafford, marking his long career with the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department. The proclamation noted Stafford began his service in June 1974, was seriously injured in a February 2015 fire and hospitalized at an Augusta burn center, later returning to recover with family support. The reading recognized Stafford—s 41 years of service and urged citizens to observe a day honoring his dedication and courage.

Finally, Miller proclaimed March 18, 2025, as Southwest Patriots boys varsity basketball team day, commending the Southwest High School team, its coaching staff and supporters for a successful season and urging public congratulations. The mayor and commissioners invited the team and coaches to stand and be recognized during the meeting.
