Gwinnett commissioners mourn fallen fire inspector, honor public-safety award winners and approve routine business

Madam Chair, Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, opened the April 1 business session with condolences for the family of Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services fire inspector senior Alex Shaverin and led several departmental recognitions before the board approved routine business items.
The chair said, "His unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of our residents and his passion for service will leave a lasting impact on our community," and offered the board's condolences to Shaverin's family and colleagues.
The board publicly congratulated multiple public-safety award recipients, including Major Michelle Anglin and Detective John Battersby of the Gwinnett County Police Department; communications officer Angelina Cofield; corporal Sean Donahue of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office; and several medal-of-valor recipients named by the chair. The board also highlighted a planning award for Gwinnett County Planning and Development: the 2045 Unified Plan received the Quality of Life Award from the American Planning Association's Sustainable Communities Division at the National Planning Conference in Denver.
Madam Chair also announced a county supplier networking event on April 24 at the Gas South Convention Center in Duluth and noted an upcoming vendor management system launch. Commissioners used their district reports to promote local events: District 1 Commissioner Carden invited residents to a Walk & Talk event at Shorty Howe Park on April 12 and reminded students to apply for the Gwinnett Youth Commission by April 15; District 2 Commissioner Ku promoted the Gwinnett 101 Citizens Academy and a District 2 town hall on April 10; District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins noted spring break park camps and urged residents to avoid littering in his district; and District 4 Commissioner Holtkamp announced the county’s Earth Day recycling event on April 26 at Striper Stadium and a family egg hunt on April 12 at George Pierce Park.
On procedural business the board unanimously approved the meeting agenda, the minutes of its March 25 meetings and the consent agenda. A motion to adjourn carried without opposition at the meeting’s close.
