Gwinnett Board honors youth commission graduates, proclaims April Volunteer Week

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners used part of its March 25 meeting to honor the graduating 2024–25 Gwinnett Youth Commission cohort and to proclaim Volunteer Week for the county.
Students from the Gwinnett Youth Commission described recent activities and tours that gave them direct exposure to county operations. "Our GYC graduation will take place on April 23," said Charvi Patel, a junior at GCMST, adding that the program helped participants "understand just how many moving parts go into the successful running of a county." Tisha Deju, a junior at Lanier High School, said the cohort visited the state capitol and met elected officials to learn how government functions.
Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson praised the youth commissioners as "future leaders and decision makers" and noted that many alumni have returned to work or serve the county.
The board also proclaimed Volunteer Week, citing Volunteer Gwinnett statistics for 2024 presented at the meeting: 51,327 volunteers who contributed 1,038,988 service hours, 11,583 service projects, 34 new nonprofit community partners, and 51 mobile food distributions that collectively moved more than 490,000 pounds of fresh food to nearly 90,000 residents.
Miriam Nafise, with Volunteer Gwinnett, said the county "is all so honored to live in a community that truly cares about the well‑being of one another" and encouraged residents to get involved during National Volunteer Week, April 20–26.
The board presented proclamations and invited the youth commissioners and volunteer leaders onstage for remarks and photos. Applications for the next Gwinnett Youth Commission cohort were announced as open through April 15, and the youth graduation is set for April 23.
