Resident urges council to require alternative designs for Sixth Street before approving more design money

A Bremerton resident urged the City Council to require Public Works to present at least two designs for the Sixth Street project before approving a contract modification that would add funds to finish the design phase.
"The main sticking point is space... the current plan... takes the street from four lanes to three lanes, which creates about 10 and a half feet, which is not enough even for a regulation unprotected bike lane," said Travis, a Bremerton resident who addressed the council during public recognition. He said the community wants protected bike lanes, shorter crosswalks and physical measures to reduce vehicle speeds on a corridor that serves five schools and a homeless center.
Travis asked the council to require Public Works to prepare two designs — the one the department is proposing and a second design that would better slow vehicle traffic and provide safer, protected bicycle facilities — and to let council and the public compare both before any additional funds are authorized.
The speaker said the project is returning to the council for a contract modification and additional money to finish the design phase; he urged that the modification include a requirement for an alternative design that prioritizes school and pedestrian safety. Council did not take immediate action on the request during the March 19 meeting; the speaker encouraged residents to attend the future hearing when the contract modification returns.
