Prosser students showcase National History Day projects at board meeting; several qualified for state

At the start of the meeting, Prosser educators and students presented highlights from the National History Day regional competition held at the high school and thanked the district for hosting.
"Good evening. My name is Dean Smith and this is my 30 third year in Prosser," said Dean Smith, who coaches at the middle school. He described the program as student-driven and reported that 17 middle-school students and nine high-school students qualified to advance.
Students introduced their projects to the board. Noelle described an exhibit on women in the national parks and how World War II expanded women's roles in park service positions: "My project is about women in the national parks, and their fight for being able to work in the national parks... it changed during World War II."
Tar Gupta and Enoch Ktembide presented a documentary on Brown v. Board of Education, describing the case's background, the role of Oliver Brown, and the Supreme Court's 1954 unanimous decision that "separate" could not be equal. The students outlined Jim Crow-era conditions and the case's role in catalyzing later civil-rights actions.
Staff said roughly 62 middle-school students competed at regionals at Prosser and praised the many community volunteers who judged the event. Organizers told the board they were arranging bus transportation for state competition with an early morning departure and long day planned for students.
