Grayslake Middle School students present anti-bullying, attendance and peer-tutoring projects to school board

Grayslake Middle School students gave the Community Consolidated School District 46 Board of Education an overview of ongoing student‑led initiatives at the board's April 9 meeting at Frederick School.
The Way of the Panther leadership team described several projects aimed at improving school climate and student supports. Student Violet said the group has worked “on No Place for Hate and Anti Bullying” by producing posters with QR codes that link to the district reporting website to make reporting easier for students and staff. Augustin said the group is researching ways to reduce absenteeism and help students catch up on missing assignments.
The student presenters also outlined plans to expand student‑led tutoring (SLT). “Student led tutoring can be a chance for students to learn and grow with their peers,” Marilyn Mata said, noting SLT could be offered during WIN, homework club or after school and that the group posted family letters and tutor/tutee application links.
Other proposals included updates to sensory rooms, improved signage so students know how to request access, and additions to materials; bathroom and hallway improvements such as new soap dispensers and more feminine products; and changes to advisory time to make it more useful for students. Elise McCowen described plans to add posters and coordinate with staff to select materials for sensory rooms, and Ally Schultz said students are “working with the GMS administration to discuss ways to continue our update and update our online pass processes and look for ways to increase our hallway passing times.”
The students also shared recent community service results. The group thanked staff member Miss Corey for 10 years of service and reported a recent event raised more than $6,500, collected 14 hair donations, 18 blood donations and supported the Avon Food Pantry and Comfort Care organizations. The students said the school has donated more than $160,000 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation over the past decade and recognized Abby Mack as the event’s top fundraiser, raising more than $950.
Board members thanked the students for their work. Director (board member) Miller said she appreciated the presentations and specifically praised the lunchroom waste‑reduction work.
The student presenters remained in the meeting for the following agenda items by invitation.
The Way of the Panther provided the board with both project plans and examples of recent community service; no formal board action on the projects was taken at the meeting.
