The Delhi Township Board of Trustees on April 9 approved a retirement and several hires across public safety while chiefs described recent emergency responses and stepped-up park enforcement.
Trustees voted to accept the retirement of Captain Scott Venel, effective May 2, 2025, and approved hiring Charles D. Baker and Jacob A. Gutzweiler as part-time firefighter/EMTs and Tyler B. Shaw as a police officer effective April 9–10, 2025, subject to standard pre-employment checks.
Chief Jeff Braun of the Delhi Police Department reported that the department’s recent hires include “seasoned, police officers from other communities” and that those recruits have chosen Delhi because of the department’s reputation. “People are coming here... they’re telling us when we interview them, we’re coming here because we’re talking to your officers and this is where we want to be,” Chief Braun said.
Fire department leadership described a March cardiac-arrest response in which on-scene crews applied an automated external defibrillator and achieved a return of spontaneous circulation; the patient later left the hospital and was recovering at home. The fire chief said the incident underscored recent EMS enhancements supported by the board.
Police and trustees also discussed enforcement in Delhi Park after a recent series of incidents. Chief Braun said the township’s park resource officer has issued multiple trespass orders and that officers used video evidence to identify four juveniles accused of damaging a fence. "If you break the law, you're gonna get arrested," Chief Braun said.
The police chief additionally warned residents about unlocked vehicles after several recent thefts. “I will tell you that you might be shocked when I tell you this — they were all unlocked, and they all had the keys in it,” he said, urging people to call police if they see suspicious activity.
Trustees recorded the employment actions on the consent agenda during the meeting; each motion carried with the board’s assent.
