Planning & Zoning requests small increases for messenger service and watershed membership

Planning & Zoning staff told the Board of Estimate and Taxation on March 5 that several modest operating increases are tied to enforcement and regional watershed collaboration.
Alexis, speaking for the department in the absence of Steven Cleppin, said the department asked for an increase in messenger service to support delivery of zoning enforcement citations; the department now has two staff dedicated to zoning enforcement and uses the constable messenger service for citations. Alexis also said the department requested a $6,000 membership increase to rejoin or sustain involvement with the Norwalk River watershed initiative, which the city had funded previously. The membership, she said, brings benefits to the city beyond its dollar value and supports a collaborative watershed group.
When asked, Alexis said the salary line labeled “regular” covers 13 employees in the planning and zoning group, many of whom are newer hires progressing through salary steps. Except for the items cited above, Alexis described the budget as mostly pro forma with few substantive changes.
The department’s staffing and the watershed membership request will be considered during the FY budget process.
