Keller launches reciprocal pickleball access at The Pointe and adjusts senior-center hours

City staff said the reciprocal program grew from a request by a senior patron and a review of underused gym hours at The Pointe. Micah Bike (staff member) described the arrangement as free to participants: "There's no pay. There's no punch card," and said the program started with four players the first week and six the following week as word spread. Staff said the City Council gave the program initial approval and staff started it immediately; staff expects a broader rollout timed with the Town newsletter and noted a proposed public start tied to the June 30 calendar (newsletter lead time means broader publicity in July).
The board heard data staff compiled on evening usage patterns. Staff said pickleball-only attendance drops substantially after about 6:30 p.m., with many players arriving in the 3–5 p.m. window. To better match facility demand and let full-time employees take the four-day work schedule used elsewhere in city operations, senior-center hours will shift slightly: the center will continue opening at 8:30 a.m.; Monday, Wednesday and Friday will close at 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday will stay open until 6:30 p.m. That change raises weekly open hours from about 41.5 to 44 hours, staff said.
Staff said they have started the reciprocal program slowly and are signing participants in at The Pointe on Wednesdays so staff can monitor participation and follow up if member behavior requires corrective steps. The board also noted the program will be seasonal: The Pointe’s heavy summer camp programming means the Wednesday pickleball offering will likely pause during the summer and run primarily from Labor Day through Memorial Day, with adjustments if programming allows.
Board members and staff said the arrangement aims to use underused gym capacity while protecting the senior-center program. Staff said the visit will credit The Pointe’s attendance tally (senior members playing at The Pointe will be counted in The Pointe’s check-in numbers), and staff will send additional notices to clarify usage rules and limits (for example, daily access versus every-day use).
