Commission tables multiple board appointments until new commissioners are seated; outgoing Fourth District commissioner urges confidentiality

Appling County commissioners moved to table multiple board appointments, including at least one Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) seat, until the newly elected commissioners are sworn in and the new board is seated in January.

During the appointment agenda item commissioners discussed several specific vacancies and whether nominees met category requirements tied to county demographic representation. Commissioners noted difficulty contacting some incumbents (for example, an individual named Ansel Lewis whose term was described as expiring June 30 and for whom staff said the county had not been able to reach). The board withdrew a previously made motion related to a Board of Elections appointment and then voted to table the remaining appointment items until the new commission takes office.

Separately, a departing commissioner identified in the record only by district (Fourth District) used his final regular meeting to address conduct around executive-session confidentiality. That speaker said an individual commissioner had disclosed material from an executive session on social media and urged colleagues to follow the newly adopted open-meeting policy and the oath of office. The speaker said that the commission had collectively selected a top candidate for county manager in executive session and called for a peaceful transition.

Commissioners instructed staff to document the tabled motions and to return the appointment items for consideration after the new commissioners are seated in January.
