Town staff told officials they mailed 26 letters last week to property owners with unpaid taxes as required by state law and identified two properties that could be subject to deeding if payment is not received.
The staff member reported, "Last week, I sent out letters to 26 people for, nonpayment of taxes from last year. These letters are just a, they're required in the state law. They just tell the people when, lien liening and deeding of those properties will take place if the taxes aren't paid. We have 2 properties currently up for deeding. Deeding would take place, April 21, and the letter specifies that information as well as the, there are 25 properties that would be going to lien if they are paid also on the 20 first."
A board member asked whether the two properties were vacant land or included dwellings; staff said both properties had dwellings with people on them and offered to look up what the town can and cannot do with occupied properties before deeding.
Staff said they will follow state-required procedures and will provide additional information about options for properties with occupied dwellings. No final deeding action was taken at the meeting; the timeline in the mailed notices remains the procedural step that precedes any further legal action.
Ending: Staff will research constraints and procedures for deeding occupied properties and will provide guidance to the board before any deeding action.
