Emergency management outlines mitigation funding from Elk Fire, match requirements; staff travel approved to teach in Montana

Jesse, Emergency Management, said the county has about $1 million in mitigation funding related to the Elk Fire. To date one application — for rain gauges — has been processed. Jesse said there was a short application window for many mitigation funds and that unspent funds will be pooled and made available statewide. Any mitigation project requires a 25 percent local match, Jesse said.
Jesse also said the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program and other mitigation opportunities will be announced soon; those competitive grants may require a higher match. He noted some mitigation uses that have qualified elsewhere include stream turbidity monitors, thinning and other fuel‑reduction projects, retention ponds and engineering studies. Jesse suggested the Big Goose watershed and city water partners (SAWS) could be a suitable place to pursue a study.
Jesse said Montana requested him to travel to Helena in May to teach a two‑day planning class; Montana will cover travel expenses, and commissioners were advised because it is out‑of‑state travel. Jesse will travel May 12 and return on the evening of May 14.
