Student representative highlights student summit, Spirit Awards recognize scholars

Student representative Zach Baron opened the April 9 agenda-setting meeting with a report on district student activities and a short video about the Student Summit. Baron described a variety of student programs including Project Prom, Vision to Learn vision screenings that provided exams and glasses, multiple science and engineering fair entries and senior CPR training sessions.
"Our story is one of resilience and transformation," Baron said in a prepared segment about the Student Summit that emphasized bringing students from urban, suburban and rural backgrounds together for civil discussion and leadership development.
During the ceremonial portion of the meeting, the board recognized several elementary students with Spirit Awards. Presenters named winners from Turtle Creek, Edgewood and Wilkins Elementary: Chance (Turtle Creek), Dominic Campbell (Turtle Creek fourth grader), McKenna Straub (Edgewood), Poppy Bishop (Edgewood Primary), Alana (Wilkins Elementary) and Juan Ortiz Perez (first grade). Teachers and staff offered brief nominations highlighting kindness, leadership and academics.
Ending: Superintendent Joe Malushnik, who had begun his tenure eight days earlier, congratulated students and families and said he looked forward to visiting schools and continuing support for programs that build student leadership and whole-child development.
