Committee upholds parking restrictions on Hamilton and Twelfth streets

The Infrastructure and Facilities Committee of the City of Wausau voted unanimously Thursday to maintain existing parking restrictions on Hamilton Street between 10th and 12th streets and on 12th Street between Hamilton and Steuben, denying requests to rescind or limit those restrictions.
Committee members said safety and winter plowing drove the decision. Engineering staff told the committee they had received three emails supporting year‑round restrictions and one opposing them; staff also provided photos showing parked vehicles hampering plow operations.
“The plow photo was pretty definitive of the winter problem,” Alder Neil said during discussion, citing a past block fire that would have been harder for emergency vehicles to reach if cars had been parked on both sides. Resident Wes Ebert of 1201 North Twelfth Street told the committee he favors keeping parking on both sides at times to calm traffic but opposed broad new restrictions, saying asking habitual parkers to change behavior might be a simpler fix.
Alder Neal made the motion to maintain the previously passed restrictions; Alder Watson seconded. The motions to deny reconsideration carried unanimously, 4‑0.
Engineering staff summarized public responses: two property owners (1109 Hamilton and 1106 Highland) asked to keep the no‑parking restrictions year‑round; one (1108 Hamilton, Josh Holland) opposed restrictions; another caller (1020 Hamilton, Darla Schuette) supported keeping restrictions. Committee members said those contacts and the plow photos supported continuing the restrictions to ensure emergency access and reliable winter plowing.
The action on Twelfth Street followed a similar pattern: a resident who lives on Twelfth said there had never been a parking problem on that block; the committee voted to deny reconsideration and keep the current restriction in place.
Committee chair confirmed both motions passed unanimously.
The committee did not indicate further study items tied to these votes; staff will continue to coordinate enforcement and communication with residents.
