Port Orchard council authorizes Saturday parking enforcement downtown and waterfront

Port Orchard’s City Council voted April 8 to allow parking enforcement on Saturdays in designated downtown and waterfront areas, moving from the prior policy that left Saturdays unrestricted in those zones.
City staff (Mr. Bond) said the change implements council direction and targets key areas serving downtown waterfront businesses and Waterfront Park. "The city council authorized additional funding for parking enforcement earmarked for Saturday enforcement in key areas including areas that serve downtown waterfront businesses and activities, and waterfront park," staff said during the business item presentation.
The ordinance amends sections of the Port Orchard Municipal Code governing parking restrictions to permit enforcement on Saturdays in designated locations shown on the council packet map, including City Parking Lots 2 and 3 and portions of Bay Street, Frederick, Harrison, Prospect, Robert Geiger and Sidney Avenue. Staff said new signage will be installed and the city will do outreach to downtown businesses and the public through social media.
Council discussion touched on the expected cost and logistics of changing signage and the use of revenue from parking enforcement. One council member noted the parking fine revenue goes to the city general fund. The ordinance passed on a voice vote.
Staff indicated the change will be implemented after signage is updated and outreach conducted to alert visitors and businesses.
