St John committee sets Aug. 30 small-business event at new community center

The Economic Development Committee for the Town of St John voted Wednesday to hold a small-business event at the new Gates Community Center on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Committee chair called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. and introduced McKenna Strayer, Parks Department staff, as the meeting’s guest to discuss event logistics. McKenna Strayer said the Parks Department is “still looking at possible dates and locations for this food truck festival. We don’t want to rush into anything, and we want to give vendors enough time to clear their schedule or look at their schedule to plan around this event.”
The committee and Parks staff discussed timing, parking and facility availability. Strayer and committee members said the town’s new Gates Community Center (part of the 40 Acres Project) — expected to be available in July or early August — would give organizers indoor backup and more flexibility for a small-business expo and related events. Committee member Amy Schultz, joining by Zoom, and other members also discussed using the small-business event as the end point for a proposed “passport” or scavenger-hunt format that would send residents to existing businesses before gathering at the community center.
Committee members also discussed coordinating the small-business event with other seasonal activities. The Parks Department noted several upcoming events where volunteers are needed, including an egg hunt at Heartland Park (three separate hunts with helpers requested before the first hunt at noon) and Freedom Fest on July 5 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. The committee weighed whether to hold the small-business event over a long weekend to maximize turnout and avoid conflicts with other vendors and rentals.
After discussing backup-location options (including whether to move the Kris Kringle Market from the Powers parking lot into the community center) and checking community-center reservations, Chuck Pullen moved the motion that the committee hold the small-business event at the Gates Community Center on Saturday, Aug. 30. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee then cleared remaining business and adjourned.
The committee did not identify specific budget or vendor contracts at the meeting; staff said they would check community-center availability and return with details at a future meeting.
