Board meeting spotlights student art, music and robotics achievements; Lakeside principal highlights CKLA adoption

The April 9 board meeting featured multiple recognitions of student achievement across the district, including a presentation of art awards, state-level forensics and athletics results, and robotics teams qualifying for national and world competitions.
Principal Ryan King of Lakeside Elementary told the board that Lakeside adopted the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) field study and that staff are seeing higher student engagement, increased vocabulary and stronger phonological awareness in grades Kâ5. "Lakeside made a decision last year... to go all on board with the CKLA field study, and we are seeing a lot of really awesome things that are coming with that â high levels of student engagement," King said.
The board gave recognition to an Oshkosh veteran's diploma recipient and then honored numerous student artists whose work was displayed at the Altrusa International Club of Oshkosh art show; the district noted the show has run for 17 years and that Preston Vang won best-in-show. Administrators also highlighted North High School and West High School accomplishments: music and orchestra events, state-level gymnastic and wrestling medalists, bowling teams qualifying for state, and forensics competitors advancing to nationals.
Robotics teams drew particular attention. The district's Wave Robotics team earned the Engineering Inspiration award and qualified for the world championships; staff said Wave will travel to world competition after winning regional awards and performing strongly in qualification matches. Fox Team Vulcan and other school robotics programs are staging an open house on April 25 to recruit elementary and middle school teams.
Other student-driven community work received note: Perry Tippler Middle School students raised nearly $2,000 for a local warming shelter and will present a concert addressing homelessness in May. The district also announced a fundraising gala on May 2 with proceeds to benefit athletics, competitive co-curriculars and the adaptive sports league.
