WSBA issues AI use policy for sections, requires notice, consent and disclosure

The Washington State Bar Association told section leaders it recently adopted an AI use policy that requires notice on calendar invites, attendee consent, disclosure when AI is used for materials, and coordination with the accommodations team for accessibility needs.
Julianne Unite, member services and engagement manager at the Washington State Bar Association, told leaders the association adopted an AI use policy for external parties and distributed it to section leaders via the section bulletin.
Unite summarized the policy’s main requirements: meeting organizers must provide notice if they intend to use AI in a meeting or to record a meeting; attendees must be informed and must be given the opportunity to withhold consent — if participants decline, organizers must stop using AI or end the session. She said disclosure language must appear on any materials generated or edited using AI (for example agendas or minutes), and the policy includes sample disclosure wording.
Unite also said that if AI is being used for accommodations, section leaders should contact the WSBA accommodations team for a separate process. She encouraged section leaders to review the full policy linked in the meeting materials and to reach out to the sections team with questions.
Carolyn McGregor, sections program specialist, introduced the policy during the meeting and reiterated staff availability to help sections comply with the notice and disclosure requirements.
