Committee forwards Johnny Basha to Game and Fish appointment recommendation board

Johnny Basha told the Senate Natural Resources Committee he has been an Arizona resident for 71 years, has a multidecade career in the grocery industry and supports conservation and outdoor traditions. The committee voted to recommend him to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission Appointment Recommendation Board, which evaluates and recommends candidates for the Game and Fish Commission.

Basha described his background in grocery operations and real estate development and said he remains active in acquisitions and real-estate work for Raley’s enterprise in the region. He recounted early partnerships between the family grocery business and the Navajo Nation, saying the arrangement employed Navajo workers and supported local stores. “We formed a partnership with the Navajos,” he said, and described decades‑long ties that he said had economic impact.

Committee members asked how Basha would represent the general public on the appointment recommendation board and how his private‑sector experience would translate to that role. Basha said commissioners must be “open minded” because Arizona’s fisheries and wildlife “belong to all of Arizona’s citizens,” and he argued his business background helps him assess applicants’ qualifications and fit.

Senators also praised Basha’s philanthropic work and longtime community involvement. After brief discussion the committee moved and approved a recommendation that the full Senate confirm Basha to the appointment recommendation board.

The committee record shows the motion to forward Basha’s appointment was approved; the nomination will be considered next by the full Senate.
