Councilors press city on construction notices, development updates and community outreach

Several council members used the April 8 work session to press city staff for more proactive outreach about development, construction and community needs.
Councilmember Agave said residents are left to guess about nearby construction activity and asked the city to do more to notify the public when private development or transportation work will affect neighborhoods. City Administrator Lisa responded that the communications team posts regular construction updates and is building a business and development database; she noted some projects are developer-led and the city does not control all communications but said staff will examine ways to improve proactive notices.
Councilmember Kathy raised broader community concerns, including recent questions about immigrants in the community and whether the city coordinates with other agencies on food, housing and schooling needs. Lisa said city staff learn of such needs through normal operations and via council and community contacts, and that departments including police have policies about immigration-related responses. She said the city has been in touch with Tumwater School District about programs such as the district’s summer-learning activities and that staff have been discussing support and potential partnerships.
Councilmember Ron Holtz urged clearer expectation management and repeated his earlier request for a public restatement of the city’s law-enforcement posture on immigration enforcement — a topic he said had generated community concern this winter. Lisa said city communications capacity has increased and that staff will continue to refine construction and service updates; she encouraged council members to forward specific questions so staff can respond or direct residents to the appropriate contact.
On the question of program continuity, Lisa said staff have been working with the school district and others on issues such as the summer youth program and that the city has provided facilities, stipends and other support where appropriate; specifics about school staffing and program funding decisions remain with the school district.
