Board hears updates on building security upgrades and $15 million capital project; timeline, door sensors and blue-light alerts discussed

Dr. Bailey summarized questions that had been raised about the security equipment: the new emergency pull boxes will be able to call first responders and, after the upgrade, trigger the PA lockdown and lock exterior doors. Door-ajar sensors are expected to be installed on all exterior doors, and “blue light” indicators will be placed in high-traffic external locations; district staff said they will check whether more obscure entrances will also receive lights. Bailey said staff plan to phase in activations after a vacation period so buildings and users have time to identify one-off issues.
Facilities updates from Jesse (Facilities) included continuing work under the district’s $15,000,000 capital project, with much of the work slated for summer. Items in progress or planned include night work on the Peter B. Becker fire system, asbestos abatement in six classrooms at the bridal school over spring break, final alarm work at the warehouse and transportation department and a roof replacement over the bridal school band room. Jesse said a uni-vent replacement in elementary music and art rooms will be delayed because a replacement coil is not yet available; the district expects to install the unit over the summer once coils arrive.
Jesse also reported on a smaller transportation capital project: bus lifts previously ordered are expected in early May and will be installed thereafter. He updated the Board on state-level discussions that could affect districts, including school aid, potential changes to CTE and retirement exemption programs, and broader conversations about zero-emission buses and federal funding uncertainty.
Board members asked for timeline updates for contractor work and asked staff to return periodic reports on schedule and milestones.
