Twinfield teacher urges district to resist federal DEI compliance interpretation

Ashley Moskreli, a Twinfield Middle School social studies teacher and Barre resident, told the Barre Unified Union School District Board she was concerned about a compliance letter she said Secretary Zoe Saunders plans to send stating Vermont will comply with the federal government’s interpretation of DEI-related guidance.
Moskreli said Saunders initially “demanded that all superintendents sign a letter by this Friday,” though Moskreli said community outcry led Saunders to “walk it back.” Moskreli said she and colleagues are troubled that the Agency of Education will adopt the federal interpretation as the state’s standard. “It’s really, troubling to me as an educator,” Moskreli said, adding that educators already have limited support and that such compliance could “harm Vermont children.”
Moskreli identified herself as a teacher at Twinfield and as a resident. The board had no discussion following Moskreli’s comments during the public comment period, and the meeting moved on to current business.
Moskreli asked the board to stay aware of Agency of Education policies and to “continue to stand up and protect very teachers as well as very students.”
