City manager highlights spring cleanup, museum exhibit, pedestrian-safety effort and boating-access progress

The City Manager reported several community updates at the Feb. 11 council meeting, including the Great Jacksonville Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, April 12; museum programming; a pedestrian-safety outreach and distribution of free reflective bands; and construction progress on a boating-access grant project.
The cleanup will accept bulky waste, car batteries, electronics, motor oil, scrap metal and household debris at the John Alexander Gym parking lot; the landfill will also accept items for Jacksonville residents presenting a utility bill and photo ID. The City Manager said the event is open to city residents and that tires are capped at five per residence.
The City Manager described a museum exhibit on loan from the University of Texas at Austin, called the "March to Freedom" exhibit, focused on the Voting Rights Act and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., open through Feb. 28 at the Vanishing Texan Museum (Thursday'Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The manager thanked Corporal Bragg of the Jacksonville Police Department for organizing a pedestrian-safety campaign and announced distribution points for reflective bands at city hall, the library, the public safety complex and local service organizations. The manager said the city has offered reflective bands to outreach partners serving people who walk to receive services.
On parks and recreation, the City Manager updated the council on the boating-access grant project: dirt work and sidewalk forms are in place, new restrooms are under construction and the project team expects completion in summer 2025. He clarified the existing boat launch will remain and that the project will add mooring areas and an additional double concrete launch closer to the main body of water. Devon Frederickson provided drone photos used in the presentation to show recent site progress.
No council action was taken on these informational items; staff encouraged residents to participate in the cleanup and to visit the museum exhibit while it is on display.
