Committee members debated how to generate broader public input for the Citizen Government Review Committee’s review process and agreed that the city communications department will take the lead on initial promotion.
Dan from the city communications department said staff “are in the communications department creating a graphic and that we will be posting online on social media, as well as including that in the weekly report that goes out to the public every week.” The committee agreed to use the city’s standard channels and asked staff to plan additional outreach if public response is limited.
Members discussed using local television and radio partners and asked whether a committee member should volunteer to appear on local programs. Dan offered to arrange interviews with media partners if a committee member agreed to serve as a spokesperson; a committee member volunteered to be available for media appearances.
The committee also debated holding at least one in-person public hearing (for broader community participation) if online promotion does not generate sufficient public comment. Several members urged scheduling at least one evening meeting to accommodate working residents.
The committee did not take a formal vote on outreach tactics but recorded an operational direction for staff: run an initial promotional push across City of Topeka social media and the weekly report, coordinate with media partners on possible interviews, and present options at the next meeting if public sign-ups are few.
