The City Council voted to initiate annexation proceedings for approximately 4.37 acres located near the northeast corner of West McArthur Road and K‑42, a petition described in the meeting as an “island annexation” because the land does not yet touch the city limits.
Scott Wadle of the Planning Department told the council the undeveloped site is about 245 feet southwest of Wichita’s city limits; the applicant plans to replat the property into 15 lots and intends to seek rezoning and utilities after annexation. Staff reviewed water, sewer, streets, police, fire and parks serviceability and noted the site is inside the Wichita 2035 urban growth area on the comprehensive plan map.
Wadle said current tax revenue under the site’s present development would be “just under $10” annually in city tax revenue, while future tax revenues will depend on development plans. The council adopted the resolution to request that the Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners find the annexation will not hinder proper growth and development and to start the municipal annexation process. The motion passed 7‑0.
