Commission hears resident concerns over notification for North End Prairie; open house set for March 31

A resident who addressed the Planning and Zoning Commission on March 27 urged commissioners to consider neighborhood impacts and criticized the city’s notification practices for a proposed development known as North End Prairie.

The resident, speaking during the citizen comment period, said the North End Prairie project initially proposed “62 homes on 4 acres in my backyard” and that the applicant later reduced the number to 42. She said neighbors received no notification before plans advanced and asked commissioners to consider long-term effects when approving projects that meet code but generate community concern.

City staff responded later in the meeting with an announcement about outreach: staff said an open house for the North End Prairie project is scheduled for Monday, March 31, at 6 p.m. at the Convention Center to allow the public and the developer to present plans and receive community input. Staff also reminded the commission about a chapter-focused public meeting for the comprehensive plan scheduled for April 24 and noted other community engagement events related to pet registration and microchipping.

Staff described North End Prairie as still in the review process and said the open house is intended to share details, gather feedback and inform neighbors prior to formal submittals and final decisions. Commissioners emphasized the importance of public input and staff follow-up to ensure neighbors receive appropriate notices as projects progress.

The commission did not take formal action on the North End Prairie project during the March 27 meeting; staff recorded the scheduled outreach events and said they will deliver additional materials and meeting schedules to commissioners and the public.
