During other business on Feb. 13, AHAB members alerted the board to state-level legislation that could affect the low-income housing tax credit and urged individual members to follow the bill and contact legislators if they chose to do so.
Board members reported that the bill under discussion (identified in the meeting as House Bill 2119) had recently been heard in committee; participants said roughly 39 testimonies (submitted and in-person) opposed the bill and none were recorded in favor. Members described the proposal as potentially “detrimental” to statewide affordable housing production if it were to eliminate or sharply curtail the state low-income housing tax credit.
Resources and recommended actions Members recommended that interested individuals sign up for updates from the Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition and the Kansas Housing Advocacy Network, which the group said circulating timely legislative summaries, talking points and templates for public comment. AHAB members noted a statewide Capitol Hill Day event and encouraged people who want to track bills to use those advocacy resources.
Attribution and caution AHAB members presented the update as an informational item to the board and did not ask the AHAB to take a formal position during the meeting. Members noted that advocacy to state legislators would be undertaken by individuals or external organizations, not on behalf of the board.
Ending Staff and members said they would circulate relevant links and suggested advocacy resources to AHAB members following the meeting.
