The Wichita City Council on Wednesday deferred action on an appeal of a Historic Preservation Board denial of a demolition permit for the duplex at 1416 and 1418 North Park Place, giving neighborhood stakeholders roughly 180 days to secure ownership and begin repairs.
The move followed more than an hour of public comment from neighbors, historic-preservation advocates and the owners’ relatives who said the buildings are structurally repairable and that a neighborhood group is prepared to raise funds and complete probate to gain title.
The case began after multiple complaints to city building inspectors led to condemnation proceedings. City planning staff explained the Historic Preservation Board had denied demolition because the duplex is a contributing structure in the Park Place–Fairview historic district and is listed on local, state and national registers. Staff said the propertyowners are deceased and that a city contractor had sought a demolition permit as part of a property-conditions enforcement case.
