Cairo resident urges city to study dog park at Azalea Park

Anna Wyatt, a Cairo resident, told the City Council she and other local dog owners would like the city to consider a dog park at Azalea Park.
Wyatt said she currently takes her dogs to a relative’s property in Wigham for exercise and asked the council what steps are required to create a municipal dog park. She suggested Azalea Park because “the ground’s already level” and there is water available at the shelter, and she said the location is not a high-traffic area.
The council and staff discussed practical questions including fencing, water access, trash/bag stations, and how a dog park would coexist with the park’s existing disc-golf features. Councilwoman Higna told Wyatt she had discussed the idea with council members and noted the city’s current ordinances do not specifically provide for dog parks; officials said that would require policy work and a cost estimate.
City leaders said the next steps are internal: the city manager, council members and staff will review possible locations, estimate fencing and maintenance costs, and determine whether an ordinance or formal policy change is needed. No motion or formal vote to create a dog park occurred during the meeting.
The discussion occurred during the public-comment segment of the agenda and the council did not set a timeline for a report back to the full council.
