The council on April 8 received an update from the Plan Commission that it is continuing intensive workshop work on a proposed zoning code rewrite and unanimously recommended two small-business grants, both of which the council approved.
The Plan Commission chair said the commission recently held its first zoning-code workshop and is now giving direction to consultants who will draft a proposed zoning code. Work focuses on residential zoning, neighborhood and business-district character, and design decisions that will guide future development; no final zoning decisions were made at the meeting.
The council approved a $15,000 small-business grant and development agreement for DK Emporium LLC at 525 Tower Avenue to cover expenses including stairwell upgrades to meet code, and approved a $4,635 small-business grant and development agreement for Senior Advantage at 2221 Tower Avenue to cover siding, shingles, trim replacement and demolition of a stone façade. Motions to approve were made by Councilor Fennessey and seconded by Councilor Moffett; the council carried both items on voice votes.
Plan Commission members were described as having near-perfect attendance for the zoning workshop series, and commissioners encouraged councilors and members of the public to attend future workshop sessions to follow zoning-code development.
