Olathe council appoints Emma Plankers to Historic Preservation Board; proclaims April Volunteer Month

The Olathe City Council on April 1 approved a resolution appointing Emma Plankers to the Olathe Historic Preservation Board and read a proclamation declaring April 2025 Volunteer Month.
Mayor John Bacon introduced the resolution and called for a motion; councilors voted by roll call in favor of the appointment. Tom Kearney, chair of the Historic Preservation Board, introduced Plankers at the meeting and described highlights from her application and interview, including her background in interior design and ideas to add QR-code signage at historic sites. "Emma will be an excellent addition to the preservation board," Kearney said.
Plankers addressed the council briefly: "I would just like to thank everybody for this opportunity, and I can't wait to see what's to come." The council's roll call showed unanimous support for the resolution.
Separately, Mayor Bacon read a proclamation recognizing April 2025 as Volunteer Month and praised local volunteers and their roles in public safety, recreation, planning and history. Members of the Olathe Teen Council accepted the proclamation and described a volunteer event planned for April 12 at the Olathe Indian Creek Library that will include service projects and a panel discussion on civic engagement.
The appointment to the Historic Preservation Board takes effect following the council's approval; the proclamation is ceremonial. No additional formal actions were taken on either item during the meeting.
