Lake County poet laureate announces Poem in Your Pocket Day scroll distribution, reads Ada Limón poem

Yeager said the scrolls, which include 10 different poems, were sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Lake County Literacy Coalition and will be available at libraries, senior centers and “a bunch of coffee shops” including Angelina’s and Jimmy’s. “Poem in Your Pocket Day and 4,000 little poetry scrolls are going to be available in little baskets like this at libraries, senior centers. They're in a bunch of coffee shops as well,” she said.
The poet laureate read Ada Limón’s poem “Salvage” and linked the selection to the region’s shared experience of wildfire: “we're entering the 10 year anniversary of the Valley Fire,” Yeager said, noting Limón’s work resonates because she, too, had to face loss and recovery in her community in Sonoma County. Yeager described poetry as a way to bring “the healing power of poetry and of writing, to anyone and everyone in the community.”
Yeager offered to bring writing sessions to local service providers and agencies that want to incorporate creative writing into programming. “If anyone in any of your services, would like to bring writing into your services to your, clients, please let me know. I'm always happy to come, and help bring the healing power of poetry and of writing, to anyone and everyone in the community,” she said.
She said the scrolls will be available starting Thursday the tenth and encouraged people to share readings on social media with the Poem in Your Pocket Day hashtag. Yeager also handed attendees a small packet containing one of each of the 10 scrolls and said a basket of scrolls will be placed in the lobby and one for the courthouse.
Yeager noted Poem in Your Pocket Day is “a project of the Academy of American Poets and people celebrate it all around the world,” and encouraged residents to read or share poems with friends, coworkers or on social media.
