Lake County Board proclaims April 2025 ‘Celebrate Diversity Month’

The Lake County Board of Supervisors on April 2025 adopted a proclamation declaring April 2025 as Celebrate Diversity Month in Lake County, signed by Board Chair E.J. Crandall.
The proclamation, presented by Supervisor Piscope and brought forward by Health Services, says the observance promotes inclusivity, understanding and tolerance and recognizes the contributions of people across gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity and ability. It specifically names Lake County’s seven tribal nations: Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California; Koi Nation of Northern California; Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians; Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians; Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake; Robinson Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California; and Elem Indian Colony.
Leila Romero, Lake County Health Services health equity coordinator, said the county’s work on diversity connects to reducing health disparities. “Diversity isn't just about race or ethnicity,” Romero said. “It's no two people have the same experiences and same perception of anything. So that's diversity of thought.”
Supervisor Piscope, who read the proclamation, spoke about learning from other cultures during military service and how those experiences inform local understanding. “After you learn how other nationalities deal with things, you can relate it to how we deal with things,” Piscope said.
Members of the public and county staff also addressed the board. A commenter said that “DEI laws and rules are needed, badly needed,” and Raven Shepherd, cultural chair for Lake County Behavioral Health, praised broad community participation: “We're all here. We all feel safe. We feel brave.”
The proclamation text says the observance of Celebrate Diversity Month has been observed each April since 2004 (the transcript references “02/2004”). The board recorded that the proclamation was “passed and adopted” and that it was signed by Chair E.J. Crandall; no roll-call vote or tally was specified in the meeting record.
The item was presented during a brief public ceremony and included remarks from county staff and community members; no follow-up actions or directives to staff were recorded.
