Dearborn to accept $5 million state grant for fire station repairs and upgrades

Dearborn City Council unanimously approved a resolution on April 8 authorizing the city to accept a $5,000,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity for fire department facility projects and improvements.
The funds, awarded to the Dearborn Fire Department, require no local match and will support repairs and upgrades across the department's stations. Chief Murray told council the department performed a facility assessment and prioritized roof replacements and improvements to living quarters such as kitchens and dormitory spaces. "Our stations are 59 years old," the chief said, adding the department has a committee and a 10-year plan to prioritize projects.
Why it matters: Council members and the mayor described the award as the single largest investment in fire stations in recent memory and said it will improve safety and working conditions for crews who spend extended hours at stations.
Chief Murray said the department has procured new turnout-gear washers through a separate grant and supplies firefighters with two sets of turnout gear so washers can clean gear after exposures. He said the first projects the department expects to bid are roof replacements and then interior living-quarter upgrades.
The resolution authorizing the finance director to recognize and appropriate the $5,000,000 passed by unanimous roll call. The administration indicated project bidding and procurement will proceed immediately.
