The Columbia City Board of Works and Safety on April 8 approved a permit allowing a private roofing contractor to stage equipment and block up to three parking spaces, plus a vacant area in front of an alleyway, at 212 West Van Buren for a 10-day roof replacement.
Why it matters: The permit authorizes temporary public-space use that affects downtown parking and circulation and requires coordination between the property owner and city staff to avoid conflicts with scheduled downtown events such as the first-Friday activities.
Property owner Patrick Ball told the board the work will cover roughly 70% of the building’s roof at the former Reinholtz store and that RIFT Roofing Systems of Huntington would likely begin construction on either April 21 or, if weather prevents work, May 12. Ball said the contractor estimated about 10 days to complete the work but he asked the board for flexibility because rain could require rescheduling. The board authorized the use of up to three parking spaces and said staff may instead allow use of the vacant area adjacent to the alley to reduce the number of blocked parking spots.
Board members asked Ball to keep Rosie (city staff) informed about final start dates and any schedule changes. The board recorded the motion to approve the permit as unanimous.
