Council postpones consideration of neighborhood/district nodes zoning amendment to May 6

The Sterling Heights City Council unanimously voted to postpone consideration of an ordinance that would create neighborhood and district nodes in Article 14B of the zoning ordinance, moving the item to the May 6 regular meeting so staff can incorporate property-owner feedback and make related map amendments.
Doctor Jake Parcel, the city planner, asked the council to withdraw the motion on the floor and postpone the ordinance introduction so staff could present an amended ordinance and a concurrent map amendment. "We are requesting postponement at this time, till the May 6 regular meeting," Parcel told council.
Councilmember Radke said he prefers the item be returned as a zoning map amendment rather than as an overlay, arguing overlays can create confusion by mixing standards. "I think that it should not be an overlay in the future," Radke said. He later withdrew his earlier motion and then made the postponement motion that carried on a 7-0 vote.
Parcel said the office of planning believes the additional time will allow staff to address questions raised at the previous meeting and to present a cleaner ordinance model that aligns with how the city's other overlays are written. The postponement was procedural; no substantive zoning change was adopted at the meeting.
