The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution 25-175 on April 9, declaring May 2025 as Building Safety Month in Pasco County and hearing an extended briefing from Building and Construction Services on disaster response and permitting operations.
J. P. Murphy, director of Building and Construction Services, read the resolution and highlighted the department’s response to recent storms. Murphy and staff credited mobile permitting sites, temporary permit centers and contracted assistance (Title Basin) with helping process permitting demand during the recovery. Murphy said the department processes about 60,000 permits annually and more than 408,000 inspections per year, noting the workload increased in the wake of three storms.
Murphy described a survey that found more than 94% of customers who visited permitting centers rated the service as very good or extremely satisfied during a 73-day point-of-service sampling period after the storms. Commissioners and staff praised the department’s on-site permitting exercises (Shady Hills and other mobile sites) and discussed continuing off-site permitting opportunities for seniors and residents with limited access.
The board adopted the proclamation; commissioners repeatedly thanked department staff and volunteers for the emergency permitting and inspection effort.
Ending note No additional funding decisions were made by the board at this meeting; commissioners asked staff to consider repeating mobile permitting events and to return with proposals as appropriate.
