Commission approves signalized realignment at Meridian/CR 52 and St. Joe Road; FDOT favored signal over roundabout

The Pasco County Board of County Commissioners approved consent agenda item C17 on April 9, authorizing the realignment of St. Joe Road to square up with Meridian at County Road 52 and construction of a four-way, signalized intersection with multiuse-path provisions.
Commissioner Oakley pulled C17 to ask for details about the long-running debate over a roundabout versus a signal at the intersection near Meridian and County Road 52. Panos Conte, assistant county engineer, said the design will include a multiuse path — likely 10 feet wide — as part of the Orange Belt Trail connection, and that the Florida Department of Transportation changed the concept from a roundabout to a signal because the signal “functionally operates better than a roundabout” with the nearby Suwanee Way and minimizes right-of-way impacts.
Commissioner discussion focused on safety, multimodal accommodations and right-of-way impacts. Commissioners noted an existing roundabout on SR 52 performs well but accepted FDOT’s explanation and the staff recommendation. The board voted to approve the consent item; no additional engineering alternatives were adopted at the meeting.
Ending note Staff said they will coordinate multiuse-path design and continued public outreach as the project advances to construction.
