Friends of Rouge Park ask council for $3.4M for park restrooms, greenway and accessibility improvements

Friends of Rouge Park told Detroit City Council the park needs basic infrastructure funding and asked the council to add $3,400,000 to the FY2026 budget for accessibility, safety and restroom access.
Lindsay Pilak testified that the Brenning comfort station should be repaired and reopened at an estimated $510,000; another comfort station at Tireman and Sawyer needs demolition at an estimated $200,000; and repairing the park’s 6‑mile greenway was estimated at $2,700,000. Pilak said park usage is increasing and basic infrastructure is needed to make Rouge Park safe and accessible.
Pilak thanked General Services Department staff for progress at the park and asked council to fund the items recommended by council member Fred Durhal (referred to in testimony) so the park’s centennial can be celebrated with adequate facilities.
There was no vote at the hearing; council will consider budget amendments in executive session.
