During the Detroit City Council public-comment period, callers urged Eastern Market to expand outreach to city neighborhoods and proposed mobile delivery of fresh produce.
"Eastern Market has the ability to get fresh produce to the neighborhoods. They could get a refrigerated truck and a truck that they drove to the neighborhoods," Carolyn Hughes said, suggesting the market operate in one or two districts twice a week.
William M. Davis echoed the call for broader access, saying Eastern Market should reach more neighborhoods and proposing a West Side market. "Perhaps we need to open up a West Side market that truly helps the whole city instead of just people downtown," Davis said.
Davis also criticized the Land Bank's practices and praised the ombudsman unit as deserving additional funding and staffing; his comments connected food access and broader concerns about city entities and outreach.
No formal council action on Eastern Market or market expansion was recorded during the meeting's public-comment period.
