Community leader asks council to fund home-accessibility repairs and help black clubs with neighborhood projects

Dettie A. Varner, president of the DeSoto Ellsworth Black Association, used the Detroit City Council public-comment period to request budget funding for home-accessibility repairs for seniors and people with disabilities and to ask for support for neighborhood associations and black clubs.
"I'm asking, the council to please include in their budget, money for the Detroit Home Accessibility Program for seniors and for people with disabilities," Varner said. She asked that the council fund walk-in showers and other accessibility repairs and provide money to help associations and black clubs formalize as 501(c)(3) organizations and pay state-required fees.
Varner also said neighborhood quarters across Detroit lack funding and need makeovers. She reported theft at Diva Community Park, saying the fence bought with a neighborhood beautification grant was stolen.
Her remarks asked the council to prioritize small-scale neighborhood improvements, senior accessibility, and technical support for long-standing community associations. No formal funding decision was made at the meeting during public comment.
