The Sheridan County School District #3 Board of Trustees approved a first reading of a draft artificial intelligence usage policy (Policy 62151) after a parent described seeing benefits from limited classroom use.
The policy, described by the administration as “artificial intelligence usage rules expectations,” was moved for first-reading approval by a board member and passed on a voice vote. The board indicated the policy will be reviewed and edited as needed before a final adoption vote.
The discussion came after public comment from a parent who said the district’s current use of AI has helped students with writing and allowed teachers to focus more on instruction. Public commenter (parent) said, “I’ve seen it really benefit the kids. ... It’s instant correction where they’re not waiting for a teacher to go through all the reviews” and added that she has seen teachers address inappropriate uses.
Board members thanked the staff member who drafted the policy. One board member said Mr. Growers’s draft “is a quality policy,” and the board discussed the need for continued human editing and monitoring even when AI tools are used. Board members also noted that use guidelines and teacher training should accompany any policy to preserve student learning and academic integrity.
The board approved the first reading; no final adoption vote was taken. The policy will return to the board for future consideration after any staff edits and administrative review.
