District describes weekend flood response; board approves repair and upgrade contracts

District facilities staff told the board that Harlingen CISD experienced flooding during the weekend of March 28, with the most significant damage reported at Dishman Elementary where several inches of water entered campus spaces. Director of Facilities Oscar Tapia said custodial, maintenance and transportation staff worked through the weekend to dry and clean campuses so classes could resume on Monday.
Tapia reported minor roof leaks, outdoor debris, downed trees and localized parking-lot flooding at other campuses including Wilson, Lamar, the Southwest Activity Center and Lee Means; work included pumping water, clearing debris and restoring electrical systems. Board members praised facilities staff for rapid response and recalled that more than 30 employees helped get Dishman ready for Monday instruction.
Following the report the board approved several capital and repair contracts related to district facilities. The board authorized awards for repair work on the building envelope at Dr. Abraham P. Conner Freshman Academy and HVAC improvements at Harlingen High School South gymnasium; procurement of LED stadium lighting upgrades for both high schools and a playground equipment project at Travis STEM were included among awarded items. The board’s facilities committee also presented RFQ rankings for civil, geotechnical and MEP engineering services to support future projects.
Tapia and board members said the district will continue to coordinate project scheduling, vendor selection and funding, and will publish project timelines once contracts are executed.
Ending: Trustees encouraged ongoing communication with affected families and said the district relief fund is available for families who lost property in the floods.
