County to apply for highway-injury reduction grants; focus on South Lake County enforcement and distracted driving

The police chief briefed the council and said the county has seen increased speeding and commercial vehicle traffic along the southern border; he identified South Lake County, and Lewiston in particular, as the area of greatest concern. The chief also said school bus and school-zone safety are priorities and confirmed the grant would include distracted-driving enforcement and training components.
The chief described existing traffic and enforcement resources and noted grant-supported activities would allow expanded enforcement opportunities and training — including leveraging an officer with prior experience in a similar program and bringing that officer’s training into county efforts. Council members asked whether the 20% match fits the budget; the chief said the match would be absorbed within currently appropriated funds and would not require new appropriations beyond what is already budgeted.
